Sell a Car You Still Owe Money On
You can sell a car with an open loan, but the lender's lien has to be paid off before the title can transfer; the offer itself is based on the vehicle — model year, make and model, whether it runs, and title status. Across all conditions, JunkUrCar instant offers (Feb–Sep 2026) had a median of $5,475 for 2018+ vehicles vs $325 for pre-2008, and 86% of accepted 2018+ offers were $1,000 or more. Offers are not guaranteed.

What sets the offer
- The loan balance doesn't change the offer; the car does.
- Newer cars with a problem are the ones most likely to still have a loan — and they also get the strongest offers.
- Whether it runs or drives, and the title status, matter as with any sale.

Repair or sell?
- If the repair is covered by warranty or insurance, repairing may be the better choice.
- If you'd be paying out of pocket, compare the quote with the car's running value, the loan balance and today's offer.
- If the offer is less than you owe, you'll need to pay the difference to release the lien.
Title and paperwork
- Call your lender for a payoff quote (it's usually good for a set number of days) and ask how they release the lien.
- Many lenders hold the title, or the state records them as lienholder; the lien release or title is sent once the balance is paid.
- Some states use electronic titles; your lender will say how the release is sent.
- You can't sign over a title while a lien is recorded on it.
Rules vary by state. See the paperwork guide and title requirements by state.

Questions
Can I sell a car I still owe money on?
Yes, once the lien is paid off and released. The offer is the same either way; the loan only affects the paperwork.
What if the offer is less than my loan balance?
You'll need to pay the difference to the lender so the lien can be released.
Who has the title?
Usually the lender or your state's title records list the lender as lienholder until the loan is paid.
Can insurance pay off the loan instead?
If the car was totaled in a covered claim, the insurer usually pays the lender directly.
