Massachusetts title and paperwork rules
Boston sellers follow Massachusetts state law, and the agency of record is Massachusetts RMV. The clean route is a title in your name: sign it at pickup, never hand over a title with the buyer's section left blank, and photograph it before it changes hands.

Plates: Remove the plates and cancel the registration with the Massachusetts RMV — plates must be returned or cancelled online.
Reporting the sale: Cancel your registration through RMV Online and keep the confirmation with the bill of sale. That filing is what ends your liability for the vehicle — do it even though the car is already gone.
