The Environmental Impact of Auto Recycling

The auto-recycling industry recovers more than 14 million vehicles a year in North America — keeping 25 million tons of steel out of landfills and saving roughly 85 million barrels of oil. Here's what actually happens to your junk car, and why it matters.

How much CO₂ does recycling one car save?

Producing one ton of new steel from iron ore emits ~1.85 tons of CO₂. Recycling that same ton of steel from a scrapped car emits ~0.4 tons — a ~78% reduction. A typical sedan recycled into rebar prevents around 3.1 tons of CO₂ emissions vs. mining new ore.

Safe disposal of fluids and batteries

A licensed auto recycler drains and recovers up to 5 gallons of motor oil, 2 gallons of coolant, 1 gallon of gasoline, brake fluid, and refrigerant before crushing. Lead-acid batteries are 99% recyclable — the lead, plastic, and acid each get reprocessed. Improperly disposed, a single quart of motor oil can contaminate 250,000 gallons of drinking water.

The lifecycle of recycled steel

After your car is depolluted and crushed, it's shredded into fist-sized pieces. Magnets separate ferrous from non-ferrous metals; eddy-current separators pull out aluminum and copper. Ferrous scrap is loaded onto rail cars and shipped to electric arc furnaces, where it becomes structural steel, rebar, and — yes — new car frames within 60 days.

Why getting old cars off the road matters

A 1998 sedan emits ~12x the NOx and 4x the CO of a 2024 model. Cars older than 20 years account for less than 10% of vehicles on the road but more than 45% of mobile-source pollution. Recycling end-of-life vehicles is one of the highest-ROI environmental actions a private owner can take.

FAQ

Is recycling a car better than donating it?

If the car runs, donation can give a non-profit cash via auction. If it doesn't run, recycling typically nets more value and is more environmentally efficient.

What percentage of a car is recyclable?

About 86% by weight is recovered as steel, aluminum, copper, and plastics. The remainder (Auto Shredder Residue) goes to landfill, though that share is shrinking each year.

Do you handle EV and hybrid batteries?

Yes — we route lithium-ion packs through certified Li-ion recyclers (Redwood, Li-Cycle) and pay a premium for intact packs.
